 HERITAGE NO : David Erskine Jones TIMBER IN WALES David Erskine Jones was born in Griffin, Caernarfonshire, Wales in 1848. His father, Henry, was a farmer. In the Conway region of that country. David found himself lodging at 19 Tennyson Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool in 1871. He was 22 at the time and working as a commercial clerk. WE can assume that around this time his travels and business took him to St. Helens and further ventures that would feature in his life later on. David played in the very first match for the newly-formed St. Helens RFC, a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. He was one of 13 forwards! St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on the day at all; the opposition that day made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’! It is highly likely that is contacts and friendship at the Saints sparked his imagination regarding setting up a Timber Merchant business in Conway. James Crooks ran a successful Timber Merchants in St. Helens. The 1881 Census records David living in Castle Street, Conway and operating a Timber Merchants employing 10 men. He married a local girl Frances Wright in the same year. In a change of direction David and Frances emigrated to the USA in 1889. They settled in Cook County, Illinois and David worked as a Private Secretary. The couple had six children but sadly Frances died relatively young. He died in that location in July 1931 at the age of 82. |
