Biography of Joseph Taylor |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Joseph Taylor KEY FIGURE IN THE HISTORY OF RUGBY IN ST. HELENS Joseph was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 23rd of January 1854. His parents owned a grocery and bakers and Joseph followed them into that business. He was readily accepted into the social circle of the ‘Originals’ and subsequently onto the playing field. He could play anywhere in the backs and emerged as a natural leader on the field. He probably played quite a number of matches but we have just four recorded fro him in the 1870s. He first appeared on the 25th of November 1876 in an away fixture at Wigan. The Saints lost that particular encounter. His last recorded match was on the 1st of December 1877 when St. Helens RFC played Fairfield. Joseph ended up on the losing side that day. When the St. Helens Recs established a rugby team in 1879 Joseph was at the heart of playing matters. He was the captain of one of the twenty a side teams who played a Trial game in October 1879. Another Original WR Thompson captained the other team. Between them they persuaded no fewer than 19 Saints to partake in the trials. He certainly was the leader fro the Recs in those early days. Joseph died in St Helens in June 1884 at the age of just 29. |
