Biography of John Evans |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Evans FIRST SAINT OUT OF THE PIT? In 1877 the ‘Orginals’ of St. Helens RFC were widening their recruitment policies to include manual workers and other forms of lower paid employment. John Evans was born in Moisten, Wales in 1856 and came to St. Helens to work in the more productive coal mines of South Lancashire. He lived at 71 Edge Street in Nutgrove, St Helens. John was employed at Lea Green Colliery. It is possible that John arrived in St. Helens with some rugby skills already packed in his bags. He is recorded as playing in just one match against Fairfield on the 1st of December 1877. The Saints lost that away fixture. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. |
