 HERITAGE NO : John Unsworth MECHANIC John was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1856. He lived at 91 New Cross Street, St. Helens. John worked as a mechanic and later used his trade to set up a dealer enterprise. His house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. John made his debut for St. Helens RFC on the 3rd of November 1877 against the Walton Flamingoes in an away fixture. The Saints lost that particular contest. We have two recorded matches for John but our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. His last recorded match was in the following month when the Originals faced Fairfield on the 1st. Of December. The Saints lost that one as well. In both matches John played in the forwards. John died in St Helens in 1927 at the age of 71. |
