Biography of George Bernard |
---|
HERITAGE NO : GEORGE BERNARD WELSH SLATE MAN George was born in Conway Bay, North Wales in July 1856. In his early years he lived at Mount Pleasant, Dinarth, Caernarfonshire, Wales. His father John was a limestone merchant. In the early 1870s the family moved to St Helens to live in Cemetery Lane in the Windle district of St Helens. His father John was definitively described as a slate merchant. The rapid expansion of house building in St Helens and area provided a huge demand for his product. It is interesting to speculate whether his introduction to rugby was generated in North Wales or St Helens. In any event George featured in the second season of St Helens RFC. He possessed some speed and played on the wing for the fledgling club. His first recorded match was on the 9th of October 1875 in a match against the Liverpool Rifle Brigade. The Saints were victorious that day. George was also a dab hand at cricket and featured for St Helens Cricket Club. He married his wife, Amy, in 1890 and one year later the Census gave his address as 87 St. James Road, Rainhill. Interestingly, his next door neighbour was Austin Cooper Carr, a dynamo with the Saints in its early days. He is listed as a Manager of a glass bottle works. Over the next decade he upgraded his residence to move into Ashfield House, Pylch Lane, West Derby. He lived there together with his wife and son Norman who sadly died in 1916 aged just 20. They employed two servants to maintain the property. George died on the 29th of January 1925 at the age of 68. At The time he was resident at Blundelsands. His will bequeathed the tidy sum of £7009. |
