Biography of Joseph Critchley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Joseph Critchley FORWARD LABOURER In 1877 the ‘Orginals’ of St. Helens RFC were widening their recruitment policies to include manual workers and other forms of lower paid employment. Joseph was born in Parr, St. Helens in 1858. His father, Peter, was a labourer. He is recorded as playing in just three matches for the Saints. His debut was against Fairfield on the 1st of December 1877. The Saints lost that away fixture. On the 22nd of November 1879 he played in the forwards as the Saints overcame Birkenhead Rangers in a home fixture played at Queens Park off Prescot Road. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. In 1881 he was living at Ashcroft Street in Parr and working as a glass grinder. By then he had married Elizabeth Watkinson and they would eventually raise 6 children. Joseph died in St. Helens in March 1929 at the age of 71. |
