Biography of Adam McCarroll |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Adam McCarroll FORWARD MADE DEBUT AT 12 YEARS OLD Writing this in 2023 I am tempted to say that this cannot be true. Surely there must be an error in his birth date or his parents were not keeping a careful check on his age. However, to the contrary all his official records point to the age assertion being true. The Victorian era did see children of Adam’s age working at coal mines and in factories so why not on the rugby field especially if he was mature physically? A few other debutants for St. Helens RFC in the period were 14 or 15 years old on debut, but yes this seems extreme. I lay the facts before you. He is down on the team lists as A. McCarroll There is only one family of McCarrolls in St. Helens at the time Adam McCarroll was their oldest child. His birth date is given on his birth certificate as the 22nd of February 1865 This date matches the 1871 England Census when he was recorded as being 6 years old Adam made his debut against for the ‘Originals’ on the 3rd of November1877 against the Walton Flamingoes some four months before his 13th birthday. Adam ended the match on the losing side. If it was obvious in the match that Adam could not compete against older men it didn’t stop him being selected for St.Helens RFC in the following month on 1st of December 1877. The game was an away fixture against Fairfield which saw the Saints lose on the day. Furthermore, Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. Adam was born in Birr, Offaly Ireland. His family came to St. Helens in the 1870s. His father, George, was a bookkeeper and his job would have brought him into the ‘Originals’ social circle. The family lived at 143 Kirkland Street, St Helens which in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. A large number of young lads from the area also were spectators whenever the Saints played at home. The saddest part of the tale was that Adam died in September 1878 at the age of just 13. |
