LONG LIVING BOTTLE PACKER

Peter was a a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 3rd of November 1870. His father, Hamblett, was a labourer from Widnes. In 1871 they were living in John Halls Row, Eccleston, St. Helens. The family had moved to Eldon Street, St. Helens in the 1880s and Peter was employed as a glass bottle packer.

Peter made his debut for the Saints on the 15th of December, 1888 in a home game against Widnes. The Saints lost that day. He was a tough, durable forward who went on to play in 74 matches for the Saints. His final outing was an away match against Walkden on the 18th of April 1891. It turned out to be a disappointing conclusion to his first team career as the Saints were defeated.

He married a lass from Manchester named Sarah Groves in January 1894 and they moved to 8 Moxon Street, St. Helens adjacent to the splendid tranquility of Taylor Park. Peter had a long life and died on the third of January 1962 aged 91. He left £906 to Samuel Groves, a relative of his widow.

At the time of his death Peter was one of the last living past players to have played on the old ground at Dentons Green. His abiding memories would have included matches against opposition from Lancaster, Tyldesley,, Kendal and of course, the auld enemy Wigan.
