TYPHOID VICTIMJohn was born In June 1870 in Sutton, St Helens. His family lived at 84 Back Groves Row, Sutton, St Helens. His father James was a collier. By the time of the 1881 Census his father had died and his mother, Jane, was working as a glass bottle packer to support her six children.

John was regarded as a potential representative player. He was a player with great mobility and tough as teak. His younger brother, Joe, was also a talented footballer and destined to have a significant rugby career with the Saints.

John made his debut for the Saints on the 16th of November 1889 in the away fixture against Askam. The Saints lost that day but John played very well alongside his younger brother Joe. Indeed they performed as a pair in almost all of John’s 33 appearances for the Club.

The partnership was operating very well at the start of the 1890-91 season with the brothers Brownbill featuring significantly in the the pack of forwards. The fourth match of the season was a tough away match against Askam in which the Saints emerged victorious. However, after the match John caught a cold and had to take some time absent from work. However, he fell ill again, this time with more serious consequences. John had contracted the deadly typhoid fever and on the 15th of October 1890 he passed away.

His funeral at St Helens Cemetery was well attended by work colleagues and the Saints were represented by Billy Cross and various officials. His magnificent tombstone had the following inscription:

“This memorial was erected as a mark of respect by the members and friends of St Helens Rugby Club to John Brownbill who died on October the 15th 1890 aged 20 years. Gone but not forgotten”
