Biography of Tom Coop |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Tom Coop LEIGH INTERNATIONAL Tom was born in Tottington Lancashire on the 10th of March 1863. He was a real character and traded in Leigh as a hatter and hosier. His only first team appearance for the Saints was on Thursday the 14th of December 1889 against a touring team from South Wales named Maindee. It was played under floodlights at the Dentons Green Cricket ground. The Saints won that day and the guest from Leigh starred in the centres. He was a regular choice for Lancashire and knew Billy Cross very well. It was probably Billy who invited him over that night to help defeat the Welsh Cup winners. Buff Berry, the Tyldesley half back, also played for the Saints that evening as well. Tom won a full international cap for England when they faced Scotland in 1892. He played for Leigh at the start of their Northern Union days and has the honour of being Number 1 in the Leigh RL list of Heritage Numbers. Tom died in Bucklow, Cheshire on the 16th of April 1929 at the age of 66. |
