Biography of John Buff Berry |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John ‘Buff’ Berry BONGER EXTRAORDINAIRE John was born in Kendal in July 1866. His father, John, worked as a Contractor Excavator. On the 1881 Census Buff was 14 years old and working as a Tobacco Leaf Opener. Soon after he was to hit the headlines with sensational rugby play. Known universally as ‘Buff’ he was an international and county half-back. He represented both Lancashire and Westmorland. The History of Kendal rugby describes him as follows: “Voted by the press throughout England as the best half ever seen on the field. Un-equalled as a thrower and passer, and any trick not known to Buff was not worth knowing. He was unquestionably one of the ‘cream’. Left Kendal for Tyldesley.” How the folks of Kendal bemoaned that relocation. Players guesting for other clubs was commonplace practice and the Saints often benefitted from this, especially if the player in question had links with Kendal and inevitably Billy Cross and co. Buff made a total of four outings. In the match against Stockport on the 19th of April 1894 and with Buff’s assistance the Saints turned round a 10 points to 2 deficit to romp home by 15 points to 10. Tom Sudlow and John Appleton scored a brace of tries apiece with the fifth try featuring a scorcher by Buff Berry himself. It is curious to note that Billy Cross watched from the sidelines as Buff slotted into his half back position. The star player must have felt at home with three former Kendal Hornets players accompanying him onto Knowsley Road that afternoon namely, Bob Doherty, Jimmy Graham and Bill Whiteley.Back in Tyldesley John worked as a Stone Mason’s labourer and lived at 36 Henry Street. He had married Mary Elizabeth Hilbeck in February 1886 and they were to have three children.Buff died on the 11th of May 1930 in Tyldesley, Lancashire.
