 HERITAGE NO : John Goulding CHEMIST TURNED PUBLICAN John was born in Ince, Wigan in April 1862. His father, Robert, was a colliery engine winder. The family moved to St. Helens in the 1860s. John was a regular second team full back when he made his debut for the first team on the 26th of October 1889. Unfortunately, the Saints lost to the Chemics that day. In all John made 13 appearances for the Saints with his final outing coming against Penarth on the 7th of April, 1890. This was one of the last matches to be played by the Saints on the Dentons Green ground. In 1891, John was living at 30 West Street, Thatto Heath, St. Helens with his parents. He was recorded in the Census as an Analytical Chemist. He married Ada Ann Troughton on the 14th of July 1897 and by 1901 they had two sons, Arthur and John. In that year he was listed as a Manager of a Bleaching Powder Department. At some point John tried his hand at running a public house but by 1911 he was down as retired and living at James Lane in Whiston, Lancashire. We believe that John died in July 1932 at the age of 69. |
