ONE GLORIOUS SEASON

Yet another rugby connection with Kendal Hornets, Billy Lund was born in Underbarrow, Kendal, in April 1857. The 1881 census tells us that he lived at Hollin Craig and was an agricultural labourer. This makes sense as his father, William, was a farmer in the village.

Bill made his debut for the Saints as a centre three-quarter against Walkden on the 22nd of September 1888. That particular match ended in a draw. Billy was a class act and he went on to play on at least 35 occasions for the Saints. His final outing was against Batley on the 3rd of May 1889. As with his debut the game ended in a draw. Those matches indicate that his time with the Club only lasted for one season. Obviously, Billy didn’t find St. Helens to be another ‘Paris’ and he returned to his farm in Underbarrow.

He also played for St. Helens Recreation. As a St. Helens Recs player, Billy represented West Lancs and Border Towns Union against Westmorland at Aspull on 2nd January 1888 as a three-quarter. The Lancashire side won by 1goal and 2 tries to nil.

Billy married Ellen Titherington in 1879 and they had four children. At some point in the early 1900s the Lund family moved to the Bolton area of Lancashire. They lived at 863 St. Helens Road, Middle Hulton.
