 HERITAGE NO : George Summers MOBILE STOKER We had a little difficulty in tracking George down but the surname provided no local clues. If we have the right man, George was born min Birkenhead in early 1867. His father, Peter, was a house painter and his mother was born in America. The family had moved to Liverpool by 1901 and after his outings for the Saints he could be found living at 49 Beswick Street, Newton Heath, Manchester. George was working as a stoker on the railways. He must have been a very tidy player as he made 32 appearances for the Saints, mostly as a half back. He made his debut in November 1888 in a home loss to the crack Oldham based side, Crompton. After his debut, he was almost a permanent fixture in the team for the following 12 months up to October 1889. In this run he usually partnered Billy Cross in the halves. Outside rugby he married Ada Sherwin in 1894 and they went on to have three children. George died in the summer of 1903 at the young age of 36. |
