OVER A BARREL

Robert was the second Saints’ player with the this name. This particular Robert was born in Egremont, Cheshire in January 1866. His family moved to St Helens when Robert was a young boy. In 1881 Robert was a fifteen years old and working as a labourer in a chemical works and living with his parents at 109 Gerrard Street, St. Helens. His father, Thomas, was both a stone mason and the owner of a grocery store.

He broke into the first team on the 22nd of December 1888 in an away fixture against Lancaster which the Saints emerged as victorious. He played a total of 6 first team games with his last outing occurring on the 2nd of February 1889 against Eccles. Robert ended on the winning side in that particular match.

The Saints community had a great social network in its own right. Robert’s sister, Ann Jane, married Robert Heaton the brother of Saints’ first teamers Bill and Albert. As it happens Robert appears to have remained a bachelor. By the start of the next century Robert had made the decision to return to Cheshire and was living in the village of Lostock Gralam near Northwich. At that point Robert was working as a Cooper.

Robert’s death was registered in Chester in September 1920 at the age of 53. He was buried in Overleigh Cemetery in Chester.
