 HERITAGE NO : Solomon Wood Huyton WORKED WITH VARIOUS METALS Solomon was born on the 17th of October 1867 in St. Helens. His father, George, was a labourer and the family lived at 27, Gerrard Street in the town. Solomon’s first employment was working as an assistant coppersmith. He later was recorded as being a foreman in an alkali chemicals factory for many years. Solomon made his debut for the Saints on the 1st of December 1888 in away fixture against Eccles. He played in the forwards that day as the Saints came away with a well-earned victory. After his debut he played regularly for the Club up to his final first team match against Hunslet on the 28th of December 1889. Indeed Solomon played 22 times for the Saints in just one calendar year. He married Elizabeth Slater in 1894, she hailed from Seacombe, Cheshire. In 1911 the couple lived as boarders at St. Marks vicarage in North Road, St. Helens. In 1925 Solomon was working as a tinsmith in Ashtons Green Colliery when he cut his finger badly on a piece of tin. Solomon did not move far from the North Road district and in 1939 his address was 159 North Road and the Census recorded him as a retired whitesmith. He died in St. Helens in December 1954 aged 87 and was buried on the 15th of December in the town cemetery. |
