Bill was a local lad who was born in St Helens in the spring of 1866. His father, Thomas, was a bricklayer.

He made his first team debut for the Saints on the 17th of November 1888 against Leigh. The match was played at the Cricket Grounds in Dentons Green and Bill ended up on the winning side. He played a total of 50 matches for the Club all in the pack of forwards. His final match was on the 11th of April 1894 against Aspull. This was a replayed Lancashire County Combination match following an objection by Leigh to the previous game. The away fixture against Aspull was played in March 1884 at Knowsley Road at the request of the Aspull club who wanted a better financial return. Leigh were vying with St. Helens to finish top of the league table. The rearranged fixture was won by the Saints thanks to a brace of tries from William Lloyd Davies and another from Bob Doherty. The Saints went on to end up as ‘league leaders’ and eventually beat Broughton FC to gain promotion to the first division.

Bill married Margaret and late in 1887 the couple were living at 12 Orrell Street in St. Helens. The Wilsons had three children. He had a job as a labourer in a glass factory. Bill died in St. Helens in March 1935 at the age of 78.
