Biography of John Basnett |
---|
HERITAGE NO : ohn Basnett HALF BACK PLUMBER John was born on the 4th of February 1856 in Prescot, Lancashire. In 1871 was a scholar and lived with his mother and father at 1 Moss Court in Prescot. His father, John, was a watchmaker. In the next decade John trained to become a plumber. His mother Mary moved to St. Helens following the death of her husband in 1876. The relocation suited John was greater demand for his skills. He married local girl Cecilia Gregson in St. Helens in 1877 and they had a daughter Agnes who was born in 1880. Tragically, Cecilia died in August 1882 at the age of 22. The brother of Cecilia was John Gregson who himself played 17 matches at centre for the Saints. Perhaps it was his brother-in-law who persuaded him to try his hand at rugby. His debut for St. Helens Rangers came against Aspull on the 2nd of December, 1882. It resulted in a home victory and the day was made sweeter knowing that his brother James was also making his debut for the Club. John played one more game for the Saints in a victory over Birkdale Warriors in December 1884. Perhaps the sadness of losing his wife made him look elsewhere for the next phase of his life. So it was that John emigrated with his young daughter, Agnes, to the USA in 1885 and set up a plumbing business in Boston, Massachusetts. In Boston John met and married Canadian Mary McKenzie in 1887 in the city. They had three children but John was not destined to see his first daughter, Agnes, walk down the aisle. John died on the 6th of August 1906 at the age of 50 three years before Agnes was married. |
