Biography of Robert Ward

HERITAGE NO :
Robert Blinkhorn Ward

ST. HELENS TO ST. KILDA

Robert Blinkhorn Ward was born in St Helens in June 1870. His father, also named Robert, was a Scarborough born church minister. As a young boy Robert lived at Ravenhead Hall in St. Helens. His residence indicates that the family were quite well off and you get the feeling that Robert would have fitted in unnoticeably with the Originals social set. Moreover, Robert was sent to boarding school at Silcoates School at Alverthorpe cum Thornes in Yorkshire. He would have played rugby there, most certainly.

Robert made his debut against Millom on the 21st of September 1889. He played as a centre three-quarter that day and the match ended in draw. He made further appearances in the same playing position against Kendal Hornets and Rochdale St. Clements though both matches ended in defeat for the Saints.

The 1891 census tells us that his father, Robert was living with his family at 141 West Park Road, St Helens. Robert’s mother had died in 1889. The whereabouts of Robert remains somewhat of a mystery.

At some point Robert married Alice Maude Beeby. We are also aware that Robert decided to make a bold move. He emigrated to the St. Kilda area of Melbourne in Australia. The couple lived at 64 Park Street, St. Kida West, Melbourne. Furthermore, Robert secured a prestigious position as a Civil Servant in Melbourne. Alice Maude died in St. Kilda on October 26th in 1917. Robert did not have much time to rebuild his life after this. He in the same location on the 1st of October 1920.

As an aside, it is interesting to note that his father managed to outlive his son. Robert Sir remarried Mary Ann Longhurst in 1895 and took his sermons to India where he remained until his death in 1930.
