HERITAGE NO : Arthur Waite CUMBRIAN WW1 CASUALTY Arthur was born in Penrith, Cumberland in 1866. His father, Richard, was a shoemaker. In his early years his parents relocated to Carlisle which was experiencing a boom period at the time. In 1881 Arthur and his mother were living with their sister Elizabeth at 5 Gilbert Street, St. Helens. Interestingly, his father was in Darlington at the time working as an agricultural labourer. Arthur was working as a sheet glass blower. He was a nippy half back who made his debut for the Saints against Kendal Hornets on the 9th of March, 1889. The Saints went down that day to their friendly rivals from Westmorland. Arthur married Mary McManus in St. Helens in April 1872. The couple went on to have three sons, Richard, John and Joseph. They lived at 22 Rodney Street in St. Helens. By 1911 little had changed the whole family were at the same address and Arthur was still blowing glass. However, the misery and slaughter which was to characterise the Great War had a direct impact on the Waite household. Arthur Waite of the West Lancashire Division of the Royal Engineers, Arthur died on the 23rd January 1915, aged 49. Despite being brought back to England after being wounded in France. He died in Kent. Arthur was buried in St. Botolph’s churchyard, Chevening in Kent. |
