Biography of Frederick Wells |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Frederick Wells THESPIAN You would search very hard to find any other actors who had played for the Saints. Fair enough, you might mention Adam Foggerty. On the 9th of March 1889 the Saints were entertaining their old friends Kendal Hornets at the Cricket Grounds in Dentons Green, St. Helens. The Saints named Frederick in the half back position. He had been all week in St Helens with a touring company who were putting on a performance at the local theatre. Apparently, Frederick had played the part of a certain Cripps in the play and several knowledgable spectators shouted his character name as the game proceeded. Frederick was supposed to be Middlesex County player and loved to play as a guest in any town that had a theatre and a rugby team. As it happens the men from Westmorland won the game by two tries and 3 minors to one try and five minors for the Saints. Understandably nothing was ever heard of the actor again as far as St. Helens rugby was concerned. |
