MATCH REPORT : MILLOM V ST HELENS 3 MAY 1890 This was the last engagement of the season. As usual, nothing like a full team was sent up. Once in the North, Kendal and Assam were requisitioned for help. It was with some difficulty that the Saints forwards were recognisable. Messers Heap, Sharp and Woodend provided fresh Cumberland faces in Saints’ jerseys. The start was not promising for the Saints as a try was run in by the homesteads in the first minute, and Moore converted it with a goal. Billy Hall and Tom Sudlow worked well the saints, but Millom had by far the best of it. By half time Millom had amassed 2 goals, 1 try and 2 minors to nil But things looked other wisely after the interval. Billy Hall on receiving a pass from Freddie Little, dodged and hunted over Moore’s head and regaining possession ground the ball behind the posts. Billy Cross took the place and converted. So it was with a little more cheerfulness that the Saints worked up. Joe Brownbill out-pacing Millom’’s Moore scored another try. Again “The Duke” (Billy Cross) converted. The Saints kept up the pressure in attacked but failed to clinch that final score. Meanwhile , Millom were kept at bay by some mean St. Helens defence. Score: - Million 2 goals, 1 try, 2 minors to St. Helens 2 goals and 2 minors |
