Biography of William Woodend |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Woodend MILLOM LOANEE CENTRAL For a period when the Saints arranged a fixture in Northern Lancashire, Cumberland or Westmorland they often arrived at the away ground with a player missing. The reason was often rooted in family finances. Such journeys would involve an early train and departure. Saturday mornings were counted as apart of the working week and workers would have to lose part of their wage to fulfil their duties to the Saints. The Saints played Millom on the 3rd of May 1890 and St. Helens arrived with a depleted team. It was the last match of the campaign and the side contained several debutants. The Millom Club loaned William Woodend to make up the numbers. We can assume that he was a player with the Millom Club. As it happens the Saints went down to a defeat that day and faced a long journey back to South Lancashire. William was born in Ulverston in 1867. His father, Richard, was a shoemaker. In 1891 William was a boilermaker living at 3 Glasgow Street in Barrow. He married Louise Kate Philipson in March 1895. They went on to have three children. In 1911 William was working as a riveter in the Barrow shipyards. The family lived at 68 School Street, Barrow. We are unsure about the date of his death. A William Woodend died in Barrow on the 3rd of August 1937. However, it is clear that his widow Louise only died in Nelson, Lancashire in 1965. |
