Biography of Thomas Hine |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Thomas Hine DECORATED BY THE COUNTY Thomas was born in Kendal, Westmorland in June 1864. His father was a house painter who set up a thriving business employing four boys. In the 1870s the family moved into 2 Queens Place, Kendal and Thomas was destined to remain there for the rest of his days. The relationship between Kendal Hornets and the Saints was very close, thanks in the main to the dynamo Billy Cross. Billy became the mainstay of the Club both off and on the field in the 1890s. He enticed several players from the Hornets to move south and play for the Saints. Diamonds like Bob Doherty, Joe Allen and James Pasha Graham stayed for years in the town whilst others had shorter spells or even just guested for one or two games. Thomas Hind was one of the latter. His debut match for the Saints was the away fixture against Hunslet on the 28th of December 1889. His second and last outing was an away match against Millom on the 3rd of May, 1890. One suspects that Thomas made his own way to Millom or the Saints picked him up from Kendal for the game. He was a star full back for Kendal Hornets and was also a County representative for Westmorland. He played for Westmorland against Cumberland at Kendal on the 3rd of December 1892. Thomas’s father died in 1901 and Thomas took over the business inherited from his father and worked as a painter and glazier,. He married Ann Ellen Bennett in 1905. The couple decided to stay in the family home in Queens Place and they raised two daughters, Kathleen and Dorothy. Thomas died on the 5th of February, 1928, aged 63. He left almost £5000 to his widow which was a most substantial sum in those days. |
