Biography of Billy Hall |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Billy Hall GROCER Billy was born in Kendal in December 1871. His father, Henry, was a nail maker. Billy was brought up in the town centre and in 1881 he was living in the Old Shambles, Highgate, Kendal. Billy was a notable back for the Kendal Hornets club. Billy made a surprise debut for the Saints in the away match at Millom in May 1890. St. Helens arrived in Millom without a full complement and had to recruit several substitutes from Assam and Kendal. Glad to say that Billy obliged. The classy centre later played for the Saints in the first three games of the 1891/2 season. It was very much a final farewell for the Saints at the end of his career. His first match for St. Helens was on the 5th of September 1891 in the home match against Ulverston. That particular game ended in a scoreless draw. It was the same result and scoreline on the following Saturday against Wigan. In his final game Billy scored a cracking try against Salford on the 19th of September, 1891. That score helped the Saints secure a victory. He married Elizabeth Ann Machell in April, 1895 at the Parish Church in Ulverston, the bride’s hometown. After the ceremony the couple moved into a Grocers’ shop at 44 Market Street, Ulverston. Billy worked in a Barrow shipyard as a labourer. In 1911, he was living at 1 Upper Sun Street in Ulverston. He was working as a blacksmith’s strike. By that time he had four children with his wife Elizabeth. He passed away in September 1925 in Ulverston at the age of 54. |
