HERITAGE NO : William Chorley PRESCOT MINER William was a local lad who was born in Prescot in April 1867. His father, Peter, was a watch maker. William was a coal miner and in April 1890 he married Elizabeth Dixon. Eventually they would raise 8 children. In 1891 the young couple were living at 20 Burrows Lane, Eccleston, St. Helens. William was a strong forward and played four first team matches for the Saints but many more as an A team player. His first team debut was in the away fixture against Millom on the 3rd of May, 1890. The Saints lost that day but his next two outings brought victories against Blackley Rangers and Tyldesley. William’s final match was against Salford in the last match of the 1890/1 season on the 30th of April, 1891. That contest ended in an honourable draw. In 1911, the Chorley family moved to 68 Doulton Street, St. Helens. William died in St. Helens in April 1927 at the age of 59. |
