Biography of William Sharp

HERITAGE NO :
William Sharp

LOCAL LOANEE MINER

He was recruited for one match in the away fixture against Millom on the 3rd of May 1890. The Saints had arrived in Millom minus a few players and had to borrow players from local teams. Of course, being regular visitors to that neck of the woods, the Saints had many connections in the area and they managed to secure the services of a couple of their rugby playing residents. St. Helens lost the last match of their season that day.

Like his father, also named William, he worked in the local Iron Mine as a miner. At the time of the match in May 1890, William was living with his widowed mother in Stafford Street, Dalton, Askam. He stayed local to marry Eleanor Townson on the 30th of May 1898 and they went on to have four children. In the decade that followed unemployment was rife and in the area and many workers moved to seek new jobs in Lancashire and Yorkshire. William moved to Rawmarsh in Yorkshire where he grafted as a coal miner.

William died in Yorkshire in early 1939 at the age of 70.
