Martin was born in Liverpool in 1863. His father, John was a publican at the Trafalgar Public House in Waterloo Road, Liverpool. Martin moved to St. Helens in the early 1880s and found work down the local pits as a coal miner. He married Liverpudlian Margaret Wilton in 1889, the same year that he made his debut for the Saints.

The powerful forward’s first match was a home draw against Sutton on the 1st of December 1883. Martin played regularly for the Saints over the next seven seasons. In all he is recorded as playing in 32 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well.

He scored a try for the Saints in the home win over Duckinfield in December 1890. His final outing was on April the 4th. 1890 when the Saints scored a fine victory over Sale. Remarkably, after playing all his previous games in the pack of forwards, Martin was selected at scrum half for his last match.

His brother David also played one match for the Saints during the same period.

Martin moved to Waterloo Street in the centre of St. Helens with his young family but settled for a longer period in Raglan Street in the same town. He died in St. Helens in April 1939 at the age of 66.
