Biography of Joseph Fairclough |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Joseph Fairclough FITTER THAN MOST LAST MAN STANDING Joseph was a a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 15th of June 1869. His father, Thomas, was born in Rainhill and worked as a joiner but later in life he pursued a career as a tobacconist. The family lived in Liverpool Road, St. Helens close to the town centre. On the 1891 Census it shows Joseph living at 100 Liverpool Road and working as a joiner. Joseph made his debut for the first team in an away fixture against Askam in November 1889. Unfortunately, the Saints lost on the day. He was a skilful back and carried on to make 49 appearances for the Saints scoring tWO tries and kicking 2 goals and TWO drop goals. Remarkably, Joseph played up to April 1895 in one of the last games before the Saints joined the Northern Union. Joseph married Alice Ann Hope in January 1896 and the couple went on to have seven children. Initially, Joseph moved in with his in-laws in Brynn Street, St Helens but later moved into his own dwelling in Birchley Street as his family expanded. Like his father he binned his joiner’s tools for the life as a fitter. He maintained a great interest in the fortunes of the Saints right up to his death on the 3rd of November 1962 at the grand old age of 93.. His nephew was the brilliant Saints and England stand-off of the 1920s, Leslie Fairclough. There was an article in the local newspaper in 1961 just prior to the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final against Wigan. Joseph was desperate to attend the Final but mobility problems intervened. We believe that at the time of his death, Joseph was the last Saint to have played on the old ground at the Cricket Grounds in Bishop Road. |
