 HERITAGE NO : John Reynolds Edwards FAST PLUMBER John was born in the Old Swan district of Liverpool on the 17th of January 1859. His father, James, was a house painter who moved from Liverpool to St.Helens shortly after John was born. In the 1879/80 season John was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. He played regularly for the Eccleston Rangers in that season. He made his first team debut for the Saints on New Years Day 1883 against Widnes. He played in the three quarters for the team then known as St Helens Rangers. John went on to play another 17 matches for the Club, though this number could have been much higher as not all team sheets and match reports from that era have been recorded. He was the Captain of the Reserves side and could always be relied to be called on whenever the first team needed his services. He worked as a plumber and house painter in the town and lived at 217 Spearman Road, St. Helens. John married Catherine Neill in 1886 and they raised a family of 12 children. John died on the 8th of July 1901 in St. Helens. At the time the family had relocated to Cowley Hill Lane in the town. He bequeathed his widow £100 in his will. |
