Biography of Walter Lomax

HERITAGE NO :
Walter Lomax

SMOOTH OPERATOR

Walter was born in St. Helens on the 11th of February, 1872. His father, Thomas, was a glass polisher and Walter would start his employment curriculum vitae in a similar position as a glass smoother.

He made his debut as a full back against Radcliffe on the 28th of January 1889, a match when the Saints fell to their opponents. He played mostly in Reserves side as opportunities to play in the full back position were limited due to the outstanding play of the incumbent Tommy Foulkes.

NORTHERN UNION ERA

In the Northern Union era Walter Lomax played two games for the Saints on consecutive weekends in 1901. These games resulted in two losses to Barrow and Leigh. He was also a well known local crown green bowler.

He married Ann Briers in 1899 and moved to live in West Street, Toll Bar, St. Helens. By 1911, together with wife Ann he had graduated to be a ‘beer house keeper’ at the Royal Oak Hotel in Higher Parr Street. Walter was still a publican when he died on 15th November 1920, at the Clarendon Hotel in College Street. He left just over £1,000 to his wife, so he must have run a great pub to become such a successful businessman.
