LANCASTER BUTCHER

John was born in Lancaster in April 1874. In 1881 his father, David, was an Innkeeper at the Prince William Henry Public House in Penny Street, Lancaster. By 1891 the family were living at 29 Penny Street, Lancaster but David had become a butcher with John as his assistant.

John made his debut with the Saints against Wigan in the first match of the 1892 season. He utilised his work related strength to become a regular member of the pack. John went on to play 48 matches for the first team scoring 9 tries and even dropping goal worth four points at the time!

John was one of the few players who have successfully eluded our research after his rugby days with the Saints were over.
