Peter Dale was born on 15 September 1869 in Sutton, St Helens. His father, John, was a clogger emanating from Northwich, Cheshire. They lived in the Peckers Hill area of Sutton. Outside rugby Peter had a somewhat tragic life. Both his parents died when he was a teenager and Peter was forced to take up lodgings in the Sutton district. He obtained employment as a general labourer.

He made his debut for the Saints on the 21st of November 1891 in a home victory over top team Tyldesley. The rampaging forward went to to play some 128 matches for the Club prior to creation of the Northern Union in 1895. Those games yielded 19 tries, 5 goals and 52 points.

NORTHERN UNION ERA

The word stalwart tends to be rather over-used on occasions, but certainly not in the case of Peter Dale. Peter played in all the prominent matches for the club during the early days of the Northern Union rebellion. He was in the pack for the opening league game at Knowsley Road against Rochdale Hornets and played 37 matches during the campaign, scoring 7 tries. For a forward, that was quite good going in those days. Peter played in every round of the inaugural Challenge Cup campaign during the following season, as Saints reached the final, only to fall at the last hurdle to a powerful Batley team. He also played in the South West Lancashire and Border Towns Cup final success against Runcorn in 1900. He regularly played over twenty matches a season and was, obviously, one of the first names on the team-sheet. He played his last match away at Morecambe on 23rd April 1902, when the Saints won by 10 to 9. In the era of the Northern Union Peter played 185 matches and scored 13 tries in the process. In total Peter played 313 matches for Saints from 1891 to 1910.

Peter, known widely as Micky, died on Sunday the 5th of July 1903 having suffered from tuberculosis. When his friends learned that he was so ill they subscribed to a fund to enable him to have a change of climate, but the effort came too late. The club too had also come to his assistance in his illness. Peter Dale was one of the most burly and hard-working forwards in that era. He made a significant contribution to the clubs early development, which must not be forgotten.
