 HERITAGE NO : William Lloyd Davies NO DOUBLE BARREL William was born in Llangedwin in 1872. He moved to St Helens for economic reasons. Many welshmen relocated to work in the coal mines in an effort to maintain employment continuity. Not so in this case, William was employed as a copper works labourer. William is presented as ‘Lloyd-Davies’ in the newspaper team sheet on occasions, although there is no ‘double-barrelled’ aspect to his surname. He is probably one of the first Welshman to play for the club. William played his first match for the Saints on then 21st of October 1893 in a home victory over Mossley. He played in the forwards, a position he retained for another 11 matches for the Club. William made an outstanding contribution by scoring four tries in those matches. One might suspect that he had played rugby before heading north to St Helens. He lived with his wife, Margaret, nee Gerrard, at 80 New Cross Street. His in-laws lived at number 101 in the same thoroughfare. Sad to report that this durable forward passed away in January 1911, aged 39. His wife moved to Widnes, re-married and lived in Runcorn, giving birth to a daughter, Ida Prescott. Margaret died in 1914 and is buried in the family grave. Although William is listed in the burial, his name is not on the headstone. |
