BILLY THE WINGER

Billy was born in Haydock on the 5th of February 1871. His father, also named William was a coal miner. In 1891 he was living at 79 Boston Cottages in Haydock which intimates that his father and Billy himself were working at the local Boston Colliery.

Billy was a fast, elusive winger who could also play in the centres. He made his debut on the 1st of November 1890 in a drawn match against Blackley Rangers at Knowsley Road. In total Billy made 35 appearances for the Saints in the early 1890s. At a time when most matches were low-scoring affairs, Billy scored 10 tries and kicked a valuable four point drop goal in just the 1890/91 season alone. His last match was on the 10th of November 1894 against Dewsbury. The Saints won that encounter at Knowsley Road by 9 points to nil, thanks to three tries from Bob Doherty, Joe Brownbill and Peter Dale.

By 1901 his father had died and Billy was living at 144 Penny Lane with his mother Anne and several siblings. In 1911 Billy and his brother Ralph were still living in Penny Lane, Haydock. His mother had passed away by then but the house was being tended by widowed housekeeper Elizabeth Ogden. In December 1911 Billy married Elizabeth. The couple were still at the same address in 1939 when Billy had retired from the pit. Billy died in Haydock in April 1947 at the age of 76.
