MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V PEMBERTON 24 APRIL 1891

South West Lancashire League match

The Saints entertained Pemberton in a league match last week. The result was a victory for the homesters. Billy Briers and Tom Winstanley from the Recs played for St. Helens. Poor Pemberton hadn’t won a League match and the Saints weren’t going to have it said that Colliers won one at their expense. When Billy Cross arrived that started to give the quietens to Pemberton. James Richardson afforded the first instalment and Briers augmented. This didn’t suit the Colliers who played up stronger and Lee Charnock ran in for an unconverted try. The next item on the obituary was Billy Hunt who scored from a pass by Billy Cross. The Saints pressed the line and it was Joe Brownbill who went over the line for a try. Billy Briers obliged with the conversion.

The game wasn’t’t of a very interesting description as pemberton aren’t very tall beer, and the Saints didn’t feel called on to do much, except make sure of their League points.

Score: - St. Helens 2 goals,1 try and 1 minor to Pemberton 1 try and 1 minor.
