MONEY FOR NEW ROPE

James was a local lad who was born in St Helens on then 25th of November, 1865 . His father, also named, James, was a rope maker. Initially, he lived with his parents in Liverpool Road but their early deaths meant that James and his two sisters, Alice and Margaret, had to fend for themselves for a relatively early age. James gained employment locally as a brick setter.

His labour of choice was ideal preparation to take on to the rugby field as a forward. James made his debut for the Saints in the home fixture against Walkden on the 4th of October, 1890 soon after the team relocated to play at Knowsley Road. He gained a regular place in the team for a while, though competition was strong for a Club which was showing rapid improvement. He is recorded as playing 32 matches for the Saints. He played his last match in the final game of the 1892/3 season at Knowsley Road. That day the Saints overcame Rochdale Hornets by 10 points to nil. As ever James grafted away in the forwards.

He married Gertrude in the 1890s and they had a daughter named Elsie. When the young family moved to live at 23 Boundary Road, St. Helens, James took up his father’s occupation as a rope maker. He died in St. Helens in 1937 at the age of 71.
