MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : A NINE try performance handed Saints a 44-22 win over Hull FC at the GPW Recruitment Stadium. Showing no real effects from three games in eight days, Mick Potters men dominated their visitors in an entertaining Easter Monday clash to remain top of Super League. Saints cruised into a 22-6 lead at the break thanks to tries from Tony Puletua, Lee Gilmour and Jon Wilkin. On the stroke of half time Paul Wellens scored his fourth of the season to give his team a comprehensive lead. Leon Pryce added another early in to the second half, before Kyle Eastmond sneaked over. Chris Dean on his first turn-out of the season, Ade Gardner and Eastmond then notched further scores. Dean made his first start of the season at centre, allowing Gilmour, a stand out performer in that position this year, to move into the second row. Puletua moved up to prop and Sean Long made his return at scrum half from a leg injury. For Hull, new signing Stuart Reardon wasn’t named in the starting 17 and, as a result, the team was pretty much the same that lost to Hull KR on Friday. Hull began brightly when they gained good field position following a knock on. But a strong tackle from James Graham and Dean, quelled any chance of an early score. Chris Thorman then tried a reverse kick which was never going to catch Wellens out. On 10 minutes, Jon Wilkin chipped through for Dean and Francis Meli to chase and they won a repeat set when they forced a drop out. Following a penalty, Cunningham went close and then Puletua burrowed over from close range. Long making it 6-0. Saints next score came moments later; Paul Clough taking an inside pass and charging 40 yards up the middle before the ball was recycled. Long then fed Leon Pryce and the half back popped it up for Gilmour to land his third of the season. Long converting. On 20 minutes, Wilkin took a short ball for his third of the season. On the half hour mark, two penalties in a row gave Hull prime field position. Despite going left and right they couldn’t find a way through and a great tackle from Matt Gidley on Thorman dislodged the ball. Hull hit back when Graeme Horne intercepted a pass in his own 20 and flew over. Danny Tickle’s conversion successful when it came back in off the post. But on the stroke of half time Long combined with Pryce to send Wellens in. As the move came across to the left, it picked up speed and the full back finished with aplomb. Long making it 22-6.

Half Time: Saints 22 Hull 6

Saints began the second half in exactly the same way as they ended the first. Mopping up a Hull error, Puletua charged through the defensive line and fed Pryce for another score. Willie Manu replied on 51 minutes and Tickle added the extras to give Hull some hope. But seconds later, Pryce ran on the last tackle and fed Eastmond who had just come on as sub. The try scorer converting his own try. From the restart, Eastmond broke through and sent a looping pass into the hands of Dean for Saints’ seventh try. Mark Calderwood’s converted try on 67 minutes added some respectability to the scoreline before Gilmour and Gidley gave Ade Gardner his sixth of the season. Puletua stormed 40 yards down the field to set up Eastmond for his second with around five minutes to go. Graeme Horne got a consolation right at the death for Hull.
