Biography of Sean Long

HERITAGE NO : 1078
Sean Long was born on the 24th. of September 1976. Gifted with electric speed off the mark Sean found the Saints set up as the perfect vehicle to pursue his talents. He was signed from the Widnes Vikings for £80 000 on the 14th June 1997. There was to be a further £20 000 payment once Sean had played on 30 occasions for the first team. It was evident from his first games that this sum would be paid earlier rather than later! His "baptism of fire" occurred just two days after his signing when Saints were punished 48 points to 8 by Cronulla Sharks in front of an appreciative yet concerned Knowsley Road crowd. Sean, however, managed to score his first points for the club in this match by kicking two goals.

Ironically, his first try for the Saints was in another home defeat. This time in the 20 points to 38 loss to the Bradford Bulls (6/7/97). In 1997 Sean played 11 matches as scrum half and 8 matches as stand off. These games yielded seven tries and 40 goals for an impressive 108 points over half a season. This haul included 16 points in the 32 points to 18 Premiership Trophy semi-final victory over Castleford.

The 1998 season saw the establishment of Sean firmly in the scrum half berth. In 24 starts and 5 appearances as a substitute "Longy" scored 13 tries, kicked 86 goals with 3 drop goals for a yield of 227 points that season. The rhythm of his famous left foot was evident in the match against Huddersfield (2/8/1998) as Sean recorded 10 goals and 20 points for the first time in a Saints jersey. The cheeky chappie repeated the feat against Huddersfield in the following season (30/7/1999) and in the 2001 season he kicked an impressive 11 goals in the home league match against Salford (18/05/2001). Sean Long was instrumental in bringing silverware back to Knowsley Road in the 1999 campaign. After a glorious season in which he notched over a century of goals amidst 326 points for the Saints, Sean returned from a niggling shoulder injury to convert Kevin Iros try in the Grand Final at Old Trafford to sicken the Bradford supporters once more. It was during the campaign that Sean netted his first hat trick of tries for the club in the away league victory over Salford (07/03/1999). By then he had established a fabulous rapport with half back partner Tommy Martyn.

In the millennium season of 2000 Sean Long was at the pinnacle of his form. In 33 appearances he backed up brilliantly to score 24 tries and kick 420 points to end the season with the "Man of Steel" award. The conclusion to his first season was a typical roller coaster ride for the team. Who will ever forget the last three matches of that particular season. They serve to remind fans of the quality of Sean and the "never say die" spirit of the Saints. Sean was instrumental in the setting up of arguably Saints best-ever and timely try in the last two seconds of Play off qualifying match against Bradford Bulls. His speculative cross field kick to Kevin Iro and several passes later Seans darting run to set up Dwayne West and the rest is truly history! Notwithstanding Mr Longs hijacking of St Bernards head and a nonchalant conversion created a carnival like atmosphere amongst the crowd.

Seans 26 points haul in the following fixture against arch enemy Wigan in the Qualifying Final helped record the heaviest ever Saints victory and provide a valuable weeks rest before the Grand Final. By the time the Grand Final against Wigan had arrived the Saints roller coaster had transformed into a juggernaut. Longs incisive break just after half time set up another Chris Joynt try as Saints went into a 17 points to 4 lead. Although Wigan performed well to come back into the match the Saints, riding on a crest of confidence, pulled clear again.

Saints managed to retain their hunger over the close season and on a bitterly cold night at the Reebok Stadium in January 2001 Sean Longs vital drop goal, solo try and three conversions helped Saints defeat Brisbane Broncos by 20 points to 18 and so become World Club Champions for the first time. His try, a darting diagonal run, illustrated Seans bravery as he dived over the line amidst flailing arms, legs and boots of several Queenslanders. Three months later as the rain poured down in Twickenham town, the Saints benefited from Seans astute kicking to lift the Challenge Cup for the eighth time in the Clubs history. In a hard game in which the Saints defence was impregnable, Seans tactical awareness won him the Lance Todd trophy. All seemed set for another whirlwind season for Long when tragedy struck at the McAlpine Stadium. A cheap late tackle resulted in Sean falling awkwardly and sustaining an injury that was to end his season. In his absence Paul Sculthorpe performed magnificently taking over Seans role as a points scoring machine. Although finishing the season halfway through Sean still managed to acquire another 161 points for the team.

The 2002 campaign saw Saints dominant throughout the season although Sean Long season was further disrupted by injury. As Saints finished on top of the league Sean returned for the run in to the Grand Final. It was as timely as ever with Sean looking sharp and hungry for more success. Although Paul Sculthorpe had proved to be the best player in the league for the second year in succession, it was Sean who carried the responsibility for kicking in the Grand Final against Bradford Bulls. With the scores locked at 18 points apiece, a stunning set of five tackles drive the ball from the Saints tryline to deep inside the Bradford 20 metres zone. As the clock showed less than one minute left, the ball came back to Sean on the sixth tackle and he made no mistake as he calmly dropped a crisp goal to seal Saints third Grand Final win in four years.

The start of the 2003 season saw Sean back to his sharpest. The fourth round draw in the Challenge Cup paired Saints with French Champions UTC. Sean reached new heights that game with four tries and nine goals for a total of 34 points, just six behind Paul Loughlins club points record. At that time he was 7th on the all time list of Saints goal scorers and fourth on the all time list of points scorers. With 87 tries he was also poised to become only the third player in saints history to score 100 tries and kick 100 goals (Len Killeen and Tommy Martyn already had this distinction). It was no surprise to learn that in the same month Sean signed a new contract tying him to the Club until 2008.

The highs and lows of a rugby league career were delivered to Sean in no uncertain terms during the 2004 season. Saints and Longy had made a whirlwind start to the campaign playing some of the finest rugby ever witnessed at Knowsley Road. The Challenge Cup road to Cardiff saw Saints collecting the biggest scalps in the game. A stunning away victory against Bradford was followed up with home victories against Leeds and Hull both of whom showed tremendous resistance. A high flying and confident Huddersfield team were dumped by forty points in the glorious Warrington sunshine on semi-final day. Sean stood tall throughout this period exhibiting great flair in attack with a highly polished supporting and kicking role.

As the entire rugby league fraternity were heralding the Saints side, revelations hit the national press about the involvement of Sean and Martin Gleeson in a bet each player had made against Saints in the away match against Bradford when a young inexperienced Saints team were humbled by the rampaging Bulls. Although Sean did not play in the match.

The publicity and pressure were huge as the Saints met Wigan in the 2004 Challenge Cup Final. Both players managed to play "blinders" with Sean punishing Wigan with beautifully weighted kicks and neat ball distribution. A masterful diagonal grubber set up Willie Talau try in the first half. However, his second half break, chip over, collect and offload to manufacture Willies second try effectively killed the game. His goalkicking was spot on and he seemd to be involved in all the key moments of a magical afternoon. A 32 points to 16 victory witnessed Sean collecting a precious Challenge Cup winners medal and his second Lance Todd Trophy as man of the match.

In mid- June Sean played in the match against Castleford before being banned for all but one league matches for the remainder of the 2004 season. When the ban was imposed the Saints form took a noticeable nose-dive. Seans ability and enthusiasm were sorely missed. The next two campaigns witnessed a mature professional approach to the game. He was at the heart of the Saints attack and sorely missed when Longy was not available. The 2005 season saw Saints run away at the top of the table only to have the carpet pulled from beneath their efforts at the end of the season. The away victory over Wigan that seasled the league leaders award for the Saints also put a cruel end to any realistic Grand Final ambitions. A particularly savage attack by Wigans Terry Newton on Sean caused a particularly horrendous facial injury and an end to Longs 2005 campaign.

The 2006 season witnessed Sean directing and organising the Saints attack. He was clearly a masterful reader of spaces and opportunities which he exploited to the full, as Saints remained once again at the head of the league ladder. The Saints stormed to the Challenge Cup Final against Huddersfield. In this match Sean made history by becoming the first player ever to win the Lance Todd Trophy as man of ther match for a third time.He gave another masterclass in tactical kicking and support play as the Saints trounced the Giants by 42 points to 12. The 2006 Grand Final saw Saints make a clean sweep of all the trophies as they overcome a dogged Hull FC challenge by 26 points to 4. Again Seans tactical kicking turned the game around for the Saints as the men from East Yorkshire crumpled under constant Saints pressure. At the conclusion of the campaign Sean was on the plane to Australia to compete in the 2006 Tri Nations tournament.

The 2007 season saw Sean on the top of his game yet again as the plays, points and plaudits came his way. 2007 was disappointing for Sean on the injury front as he only competed in 17 matches. Furthermore Sean seemed to have lost confidence in the goalkicking department. Despite this lack of continuity Sean collected another Challenge Cup winning medal in the comfortable win over Catalans Dragons and for once he was not named Lance Todd Trophy winner. The Saints finished top of the tree for a third year in succession but the Grand Final loss against Leeds was one to forget.

The 2008 campaign saw Sean revived and kicking with confidence. The supporters witnessed a mature scrum half controlling the attack and in complete tandem with a sensational Leon Pryce. His kicking was instrumental in gaining valuable territory for the Saints to unleash their deadly attacks. The highlight for Sean and the Saints was a third successive Challenge Cup Final victory over Hull FC. The season followed a similar pattern to the 2007 campaign as Saints finished on top of the league for a fourth time in a row only to lose out to Leeds in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. The Long points machine was rolling again in this campaign as he scored a further eight tries, kicked 97 goals and slotted over two drop goals to add another 228 points to his career statistics. At the end of 2008 Sean was just two points away from notching up 2500 points, well clear in second place in the all-time Saints top points scorers. He was second on the goalkicking charts just 65 goals from 1000 goals for the club and fourteenth on the try charts with 152 touchdowns.

The 2009 season proved to be a roller coaster season for the Saints. The ride however, ultimately ended in disappointment as the Saints trophy cabinet was laid bare for the first time since the 2003 campaign. Some sparkling performances were punctuated with below par matches as the club shaped a new team for the future and youth was given its head.

Sean still demonstrated in his last campaign how vital he was in the success of the club. He was instrumental in driving the pack forward and taking on defences. Sean left the club in second place on the club all time points scorers chart behind the legendary Kel Coslett.

One can get carried away when discussing players who collect points for fun but such references do highlight the importance of such players in bringing silverware to any club. Sean has scored 20 points in a match no fewer that 16 times. He has played for Great Britain on seven occasions and represented England in the 2000 World Cup. In four successive matches from July 16th. to August 6th. 2000, Sean scored over 20 points for the Club. Sean Long was the quintessential man for all seasons!
