Biography of Maurie Fa asavalu

Despite his quiet demeanour off the field, Maurie was a fearsome player on it with a devastatingly powerful running style that was honed playing for Samoa in Rugby Union Sevens. His career really took off with the arrival of coach Daniel Anderson who challenged Maurie to fulfil his potential in the game. Maurie possessed great strength and speed for such a big athlete and the Saints used him as an impact interchange, a role which he undertook to great effect. He also developed a superb offload pass as he was being tackled. Supporters would love to see the determination of the player as he eyed the stripe on one of his thundering runs. In so doing he had scored 35 tries by July 2009 including braces against Batley, Doncaster and Huddersfield Giants. Some of which, to the delight of Saints fans, have seen regular reprisals of his inimitable try celebrations.

The 2005 season realised a stronger Saints side as they progressed to finish on top of the league ladder under the astute coaching of Daniel Anderson. Maurie notched up 25 appearances for the season. He also revelled in the 75 points to nil thrashing of Wigan in the sixth round of the Challenge Cup, helping himself to a couple of tries in a man of the match performance. The season ended in disappointment for Maurie and the boys as key injuries at the tail end of the season dented their hopes of appearing in a Grand Final.

The 2006 season brought the rewards for Maurie as the team swept the board to win all the honours and Maurie played an important role in the victories over Huddersfield in the Challenge Cup Final and the Grand Final win over Hull FC.

The August 2007 bank holiday saw the Challenge Cup Final return to the Wembley stadium with Maurie part of the team who lifted the cup again for the second year in succession as victory over Catalans Dragons was secured. The Saints finished top of the league pile again that season for the third time in a row. Another clean sweep that year was prevented by a top performance from Leeds in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

In 2008 Maurie seemed to raise his energy levels again at the start of the season only to have his hopes dashed by injuries as his appearances were restricted to just 20 games in the campaign. The season traced a similar pattern to the previous campaign as the Saints finished top of the league for a fourth time under Daniel Anderson, Maurie gained his third Challenge Cup winners medal as the Saints overcame Hull FC at Wembley before falling to Leeds in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

On the international scene Maurie made a try-scoring debut for Great Britain in the 2007 Test Series against New Zealand and played in the 2008 World Cup.

The 2009 season proved to be a roller coaster season for the Saints. The ride however, ultimately ended in disappointment as the Saints trophy cabinet was laid bare for the first time since the 2003 campaign. Some sparkling performances were punctuated with below par matches as the club shaped a new team for the future and youth was given its head. Maurie made his 150th appearance for the club in the 2009 Grand Fianl.

Maurie left some great memories behind at Knowsley Road when he joined Harlequins RU team in 2010.
