Biography of Matt Gidley



HERITAGE NO : 1165
Matt Gidley is one of the most recognisable Rugby League players in the world. Brought in as a replacement for Jamie Lyon, the former Newcastle Knight had little difficulty adjusting to life in Super League scored 17 tries in 33 appearances. His only success in the NRL was a Grand Final win against Parramatta Eels in 2001. He has also played 11 State of Origin matches for New South Wales and 11 times for Australia, including the 2000 World Cup where he scored the opening try in the Old Trafford Final to set the Kangaroos on their way to victory. He has made nearly 250 first grade appearances in his career and has great feet with excellent ball handling skills. In fact, the back flick synonymous with Lyon, was Matt's trademark before the Sea Eagle wowed Saints speckies with the skill. His service has aided Gardner to top the national try scoring charts in 2008.

Rarely mentioned is the superb defensive play of the amiable Aussie. His first two seasons at Knowsley Road resulted in two winning Challenge Cup medals as the Saints finished top of the league. His only disappointments were the two Grand Final losses against Leeds Rhinos in 2007 and 2008.

The 2009 season proved to be a roller coaster season for the Saints. The ride however, ultimately ended in disappointment as the Saints trophy cabinet was laid bare for the first time since the 2003 campaign. Some sparkling performances were punctuated with below par matches as the club shaped a new team for the future and youth was given its head.

Matt demonstrated his silky skills throughout the campaign and ended the campaign just four appearances shy of a century for the Saints. His contract extension for the 2010 campaign was warmly greeted by all supporters. When Matt left the Saints he returned to Newcastle to become their Chief Executive utilising his Masters degree in business. Matt Gidley a very smart man on and off the field.
