SUTTON STALWART

Sam was born on the 15th of January 1871 in Sutton, St. Helens. His father, James, was a glassworks labourer.

A former member of the Sutton junior team, he played most of his matches in the pack and was a stalwart for the Saints. He made his debut against Widnes on the 28th of October 1893 at Knowsley Road. Sam was on the winning side that day and managed to score a try to seal the victory. In the pre Northern Union period Sam played 42 matches for the Saints and scored two further tries in matches against Widnes again and Tyldesley.

NORTHERN UNION ERA

Sam Rimmer played in the first ever Northern Union game for the Saints against Rochdale Hornets on the 7th September 1895. It was a winning start and he continued to play another 44 matches for the Saints. His only try in the Northern Union era was in the third round of the Challenge Cup when Saints defeated Wigan by 11 points to nil. Sam finished his first team career on the 24th of April, 1897in the first ever Challenge Cup Final against Batley when a brave St Helens outfit were downed by the men from Yorkshire.

Like his father, Sam was employed as a labourer in a local glass house. He lived at 333 Sutton Road, St. Helens with his parents.

Tragically, he died in April 1903 at young age of 32.
