 HERITAGE NO : William Thomas Duncan LEAD BURNING PLUMBER Thomas was a local lad who was born in St Helens in April 1867. His father, named William Claudius Duncan, was a bookkeeper who had moved to St. Helens from Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. In 1881 the family were living at 53 Talbot Street, St. Helens. This was a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. Ten years later William could be found living at 4 Shaw Street, St. Helens still with his parents. On the rugby field William was a tough forward and a regular selection for the Saints at a time when they were emerging as a rugby force in the region. He made his first team debut on the 20th of September 1890 in a home match against top Westmorland side, Kendal Hornets. The Saints prevailed that day and William impressed all that witnessed the event. This was just the third game that had been held on the new Knowsley Road ground. In all William played 25 matches for the Saints’ first team. In 1905, he set sail for a new life in Canada. He settled in Hamilton, Ontario with his wife Ethel and son Thomas. His occupation was described as plumber and a lead burner. We believe William died in Hamilton in the 1940s. |
