BIG TOM

Tom was born on the 17th of December 1870 in St. Helens. He was a bottle maker by trade and his family lived at 15 Crossley Road in the That Heath district of the town. Tom’;s father, William was a glassmaker.

He mad his debut for the Club on the 3rd of May, 1889 against Batley. That match ended in a draw. He was a towering forward and slotted straight into the Saints’ pack. Tom proceeded to play another 62 matches for the Saints prior to the establishment of the Northern Union. In this games Tom scored four tries.

NORTHERN UNION ERA

Tom was a very hard forward who played for the Saints from the birth of the Northern Union in 1895 to 1901. He was often at the heart of the forward drives which dominated play at the time. During the Northern Union period played 127 times for the club and scored four tries against Tyldesley, Stockport, Birkenhead and Rochdale Hornets. Tom played with his brother William for the Saints in the first ever Challenge Cup Final against Batley. The Saints lost that match by 10 points to 3 despite the efforts of forwards like Tom. His final match for the Saints was against Widnes on the 5th of April, 1901. Tom ended his career on a high as the Saints defeated their local rivals by three points to nil.

The Winstanley bothers, Tom and Bill, must have belonged to a close knit family for most of their family lived in the same road in That Heath. Tom died in St Helens in April 1947 at the age of 76.
