MATCH REPORT : SAINTS cruised to a 38-12 over Salford City Reds on Friday night. Defensively sound throughout and tenacious when given space in attack, they recorded their biggest win of the season so far. Saints led 20-0 at half time thanks to some excellent stuff from Jon Wilkin (2), Leon Pryce and a fantastic team try as the hooter sounded from Chris Flannery. And once Ade Gardner had popped up with another try, it was plain sailing. James Graham and Keiron Cunningham completing the scoring. Mick Potter gave a debut to Academy Second-rower Matty Ashurst and there was an appearance off the bench from prop Jake Emmitt. Gary Wheeler played on the wing with a returning Chris Flannery as his centre. Andrew Thornley made his debut for Salford and the familiar face of veteran Robbie Paul returned to the GPW Recruitment Stadium. Salford kicked off and Saints has early pressure, sending the ball wide through Long, Pryce, Gidley and Gardner. But the ball went to ground. On eight minutes, Long tested Fitzpatrick with a high ball. And a minute later Jon Wilkin put Saints ahead with a nicely worked try. Gidley and Gardner kept the ball alive and on the last tackle it came left, into the hands of Wilkin, who stepped inside and put down. Long with the extras. Salford won a repeat set on 16 minutes when Wilkin was caught in goal and then another as the Saints were caught offside. But Saints were tenacious in defence and saw off the threat. And a few minutes later Pryce bamboozled the Salford defence to increase the lead further. Salford were beginning to lose their discipline and that was giving the Saints prime field position whenever they needed to clear their lines. But the home side found the Reds tough to crack despite some excellent passing moves. On 37 minutes, a Salford error allowed Jon Wilkin to grab his second. Sean Long put up another towering bomb which was missed by Mark Henry allowing Wilkin to touch down. The winger missed the ball on the full, letting it to go under him, and giving Wilko the easiest of tries. Long wide with the extras. And on the stroke of half time, the ball went through seven pairs of hands as the Saints unlocked the Reds’ defence. It came from Wheeler’s persistence forcing a drop out after Jon Wilkin’s cute chip through. As the hooter went and the ball was dropped out, it came left through Pryce, with speed, into the hands of Wilkin and Flannery who went over. Superb. Long wide with the extras. Half Time: Saints 20 Salford 0 Early in the second half, Ratchford looked to have touched down following a sweet kick from Paul. But Silverwood denied it saying it had been knocked forward. Alker then slipped the ball to Leuluai but he was held up short. Yet, it was Saints who extended the lead with their fifth try of the game. Roby scampered 50 yards to set up the try; the ball then came left into the hands of Pryce, who fed Gidley and finally Gardner for another four-pointer. Long with a pearler from the touchline. Gary Wheeler was denied Saints’ next score for a double movement following some pacey work from Leon Pryce and Jon Wilkin. Wheels then had his inside pass intercepted as he looked to set up another. It was delaying the inevitable as James Graham touched down moments later. Clough was inches short on a drive then Wilkin was caught after a nice move from Long and Pryce. But seconds later, James Graham took a pass, span round and was in. Long with the extras. Cunningham then barged over for another score and Long was perfect with the conversion. Salford pulled one back after two sets of pressure through Fitzpatrick on 70 minutes. Ratchford with the conversion. Thornley added a late try to make the final score respectable. |
