MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : We started in sensational style in their first curtain raiser of the season scoring twice in the opening 5 minutes. First after only 90 seconds as Channy Crowl went the final 20 metres to the posts after Tara Jones’ smart break from dummy half. Saints were in again minutes later benefiting from two Bulls penalties which piggybacked them into the visitors half. The unstoppable Vicky Whitfield beat three Bulls defenders on the line to score her first of the afternoon. Leah Burke was then denied a try due to a forward pass and minutes later Pip Birchall knocked on with the begging after a great Naomi Williams break. The second half brought a better Bulls performance, but ultimately Saints were in almost complete control throughout. Six minutes into the second period another Whitfield drive saw her dragged down inches short only for Jones to dive over at the play the ball to extend the Saints lead. Down the other end the Saints defensive mettle was tested as the Bulls pounded the Saints line, but without success. Jodie Cunningham, the stand-out back on the field almost created a chance on the hour mark but her pass hit the deck. From the return set 16 year old Darcy Stott announced herself onto the senior rugby stage. She had put in a big hit in the first half sitting her opposite number down, but this time she sat two more Bulls players down, casually throwing tacklers away with ease as she went on a barnstorming 40 metre charge. With 10 minutes to go Leah Burke missed two golden opportunities in consecutive sets, before Cunningham showed what an asset she is to the side keeping the clean sheet with a fine try saving tackle. The day was rounded off in style as Whitfield crowned a player of the match performance with another 20 metre charge to the sticks for the fourth try. Faye Gaskin’s fourth goal rounded off the victory.
