 HERITAGE NO : Robert Grice YOUNG ON DEBUT Robert Grice was born on the 10th of May 1875. His father, William, was a labourer in a coal mine. In 1891, Robert was living with his family at 111 Norman Road in Sutton, St. Helens. Many of his neighbours would have been coal miners but Robert started his working life as a glass grinder. Robert was one of ten children. Robert made his debut for the Saints before his sixteenth birthday on the 14th of February 1891. The match was an away fixture against Radcliffe and young Robert ended up on the losing side that day. He must have made a good impression because he was selected to play for the next three Saturday fixtures in the first team. Following these four consecutive matches, Robert did not appear in a first team kit until the 27th of April, 1895. We can only assume that Robert was playing in the second team at Knowsley Road or he had suffered a serious injury. Outside rugby, Robert married Lois Howarth in October 1899 and they went on to have six children. NORTHERN UNION ERA Robert Grice played two matches for the Saints in 1896 and 1897. The first game saw the club lose narrowly to Tyldesley whilst his last match witnessed a comfortable Saints victory. In 1911 Robert was living at 199 Berrys Lane, St. Helens and working like his father before him as a coal hewer. He died in St. Helens in October 1932 at the age of 57. |
