Ned was born in St Helens on the 16th of August 1869. His early address was 5 Stone Row, Eccleston. His father, also named Edward, was a glass grinder and Ned was one of eight children. By 1891 the family had relocated to 5 Bewsey Street in Thatto Heath.

He was a regular player for the Saints in the five seasons leading up to the birth of the Northern Union. He made his debut on the 27th of December 1890 in a home victory over York. He was an adaptable player who could perform well in the forwards or at half back. In the pre Northern Union season Ned made 145 appearances for the Saints scoring 19 tries and kicking one goal for a total of 50 points. He played for the Saints and won a medal when the club was promoted as Champions into the Lancashire First Division at the end of the 1893-94 season. The medal itself survives in pristine condition to this day.

NORTHERN UNION ERA

Ned Ashcroft took part in the first Northern Union match played by the Saints, at home to Rochdale Hornets in 1895. Ned did not play in the 1896-97 season for whatever reason, whether from injury or work commitments, but played later although spasmodically in the reserves. His final match for the Saints was against Stockport in 1901. It was a second round Challenge Cup game in which the Saints prevailed by 11 points to 5. A redoubtable forward, he was good friends on and off the field with his fellow Thatto Heathers Tom Foulkes and Billy Briers.

Ned lived in Bates Crescent, St Helens in 1911 and was employed as a glass stopper maker. He lived there with his wife Mary and five children. He died in St Helens in June 1941 aged 71.
