John was a local lad who was born in St Helens in April 1867. He had a brother James Cookson and a sister Elizabeth. His family home was in Bold Street, St. Helens and his father, John was an agent for the Sankey Brook Colliery. After the death of his parents the siblings separated into various lodgings around St. Helens.

John made his debut for the Saints on September the 27th, 1890 in a home victory over Askam. He had a reputation as a hard tackling forward and wen on to play 45 matches for the Saints. He scored a solitary try for the Club in the away fixture against Salford on the 18th of September 1891. His try helped the Saints to a tight 11 points to 7 victory. Most of his first team games occurred between 1890 and 1892. Perhaps he played regularly in the reserves after this or he concentrated on his occupation. And his new family.

He married Matilda Hardman in October 1896 and they went on to raise five children. In 1901 John was the manager of a brickworks and living in North Road in the town. Just 10 years later he was a Brick Manufacturer and living at Brentwood, Buttonwood, Lancashire. Things were certainly looking up for John.

Amazingly, his personal trail goes cold after this time. There is no obvious death record although his wife, Matilda, was living in 1939 and described as a widow. She was undertaking paid domestic duties to put food on the table. The inference being that at some point matters took a turn for the worse.
