MATCH REPORT : The opening five minutes was all Saints. The hosts kept the ball alive on the last tackle, opting to run it from within our own half and Harry Robertson set Jon Bennison away. He tried to pass on his inside, but Matt Dufty deflected it down and gave Saints a repeat set. From that repeat set, Saints got a penalty for a late hit on Jonny Lomax which we opted to kick for two and Mark Percival obliged, 2-0 the hosts led early on. Saints continued to press. A knock on from Matt Dufty deep in the Warrington half was followed by a penalty to the hosts. Saints ran it and Percival opted for an early kick which forced the visitors to concede a dropout. Saints repaid the initial favour during the set though, as Alex Walmsley was unable to collect a pass. Despite Saints’ dominance, it was Warrington who scored the first try of the game. Marc Sneyd put a dangerous kick in and George Williams won the race to the loose ball, scoring under pressure. Sneyd converted, 2-6 Warrington led. Saints tried to hit back quickly. A penalty pushed the Red V into the Warrington half, Lomax threw a dummy and tried to squeeze through a gap but the ball went to ground and the Wolves survived again. As we entered the final ten minutes of the first half, Warrington were awarded a scrum ten metres from the Saints line and the hosts got caught offside. The visitors opted for two points which Sneyd converted, 2-8 they led. Another Saints chance came and went. A good move down the right edge put the Red V in good field position. On the last, Jack Welsby kicked high to the left corner which Dayon Sambou claimed well but Warrington tackled him short of the line, turnover. Despite Saints best efforts to reclaim the lead, it was the Wolves who led 2-8 at the break at the Totally Wicked Stadium. Saints continued to apply the pressure early on in the second half. Paasi and Bennison both went close before Lomax kicked high towards Sambou on the left wing, Saints dragging the Warrington player into touch but referee Chris Kendall ruled knock on. Lomax challenged the call and it was successful, giving Saints another set ten metres out. This time Saints did take advantage of the extra set. After using up a few of the tackles, Morgan Knowles got the ball under the sticks and powered his way over. Percival added the extras, 8-8 we were tied. Soon after we had a trip to the video referee. Saints looked to add more points but a loose pass from Welsby found the ground, Ashton picked it up and raced away to score under the sticks. After a quick check, the try was awarded. Sneyd added the extras, 8-14. Again, Saints responded well. After forcing a repeat set, Saints moved the ball well from right to left, Percival found Sambou who finished acrobatically in the corner on his Saints debut. Percival was unable to convert, 12-14 Saints trailed. Warrington almost had a third try. A flowing move set Rodrick Tai away down their right wing, but some great last ditch defending from Saints held the Warrington man up short. Another chance quickly followed. Again Tai broke down the right wing to lay them platform. Sam Powell was then held up over the line, as Saints again tried to keep it a one-score game late on. Saints tried to hit back. From deep within our own half, Percival broke down the left edge into the Wolves half before being tackled. The hosts were unable to crack a stubborn Warrington defence though, as Sailor’s kick on the last tackle was claimed by Dufty. That was the final chance the hosts had, as Warrington claimed a 12-14 victory at the Totally Wicked Stadium. Thanks to the Saints Media Centre for their report. |
